Discovered in 1788, it was initially a provisioning port for the whaling industry, but upon the decline of whaling its economy shifted to the export of the endemic kentia palm. If you look closely you can see some of these in the left center of the photo. These days their primary industry is tourism but the beautiful kentia still plays an important role in the island's economy.
