Following a visit to the tomb paintings at Luxor, Egypt, in 1979–80, Bridget Riley’s palette became increasingly vivid. By the time she came to paint ‘Shadow Rhythm’, it had intensified even further.
.
Behind a deceptively simple surface lies Riley’s encyclopedic knowledge of art history, colour theory and her detailed study of the works of Grand Masters like Titian’s ‘Bacchus and Ariadne’.
.
Bridget Riley (b. 1931), ‘Shadow Rhythm’, 1989. Oil on canvas, 65 ¼ x 8 9¾ in. (165.7 x 228 cm.). Estimate: £500,000–800,000.
.
Modern British Art Evening Sale – 19 June at Christie’s London.
