Yesterday we went back to the military base that was such a huge part of my childhood. For no particular reason other than it’s a tangible way I feel close to my dad in a linear sense. And it’s one of the few if not only places I recall that still looks exactly as it did from years ago. There is sort of a comforting nostalgia in that. It was a busy day on base, people working, men and women training and doing drills, and some sort of event happening. We managed to find this quiet shaded spot down near the old stables and I spent some time journaling in my VN with my father’s pen remembering all the little idiosyncratic and everyday memories that aren’t necessarily the kind for storytelling but are the moments that stay alive and vivid in one’s heart. This place in many ways feels like a safe home away from home and I’m ever grateful that I’m able to still visit and remember. And while we were sitting here, the breeze was rustling through the leaves again and I smiled. He’s still finds a way to let us know he’s near.
