Last week at Outdoor Retailer, surrounded by pictures of mountains while standing in a concrete building, I felt particularly antsy. I pointed at an innocent bystander. “Yo @_caseyelliott, you wanna climb the Diamond?” We started hiking yesterday at 2am, got to the base by sunrise, and began battle with Ariana (5.12-). I tried this route last week during my first adventure up the Diamond but fell at the crux. This time, it went clean! ?

Casey, who had never been above 11,000 feet in his life, had a slightly harder time at 13,500. During one of his leads he said, “If I pitch off I think I might vomit.” He didn’t ??, pushing through and getting to the top despite the relentless elevation pump. We made it up and down the mountain in one piece!

I have to admit I was nervous about climbing with a new partner who had never been to the Colorado alpine, in an area I had only been once before, with a weather forecast that called for 50% rain. But sometimes you just have to go for it and see what happens. @_caseyelliott brought the psyche, support, and try-hard to round off a great day on the Diamond. Thanks for the instantaneous “YES!!” in that concrete jungle ???
