#SpeakingInDance | “I’m having déjà vu,” @popmasterfabel said of being back at the East River Park Amphitheater. On Aug. 9 as part of @summerstage, he’ll preside over a workshop there in conjunction with a screening of “Wild Style,” Charlie Ahearn’s influential 1983 film about hip-hop culture. Fabel was at the amphitheater for the filming of the final scene, but there were arguments, and, well, he didn’t end up dancing. “I bum-rushed the stage anyway,” he said. “The experience was amazing. The cultural vibrancy was all sort of condensed and brought here on that day.” In this solo, which Fabel improvised for us, he said, “I’m basically freestyle popping -- Electric Boogaloo style, and some other techniques that I’ve learned along the way.” Fabel, 53, grew up in Spanish Harlem b-boying, rocking and tagging, before studying the intricacies of popping with #SugaPop, from the West Coast, who had mastered the form from the source: the Electric Boogaloos. “Suga Pop defined it for us: ‘This is a pop. Make it mysterious. Flex your muscles: That way people have to figure out where it’s coming from.’ ” Sharp muscular control sends stutters throughout the body, creating minuscule isolations. “It’s intense,” Fabel told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “I like to go in hard.” @vickydu_ took this #video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly exploration of #dance.
