The Citadel once fought the admission of women. But in May, Sarah Zorn became regimental commander — the top cadet at the famed Southern military college. She’s the first woman in the role. On Saturday, the photographer @alyssaschukar followed Sarah back to @thecitadel1842. After a summer spent training abroad, it was the 21-year-old cadet’s first big chance to act as a leader. 478 upperclassmen — called the cadre — woke up before dawn for a day of training exercises. The long day, which was guided by current and former special operations and military personnel, ended with this Navy Seal-style training intensive on Folly Beach. It might not sound like fun to everyone, but the cadets were all smiles. “I’m a little hoarse, a little salty, a little sandy,” Sarah said at the end of the day.
