These kids aren’t doing seat drops and belly flops on the trampoline. They’re aiming for triple, quadruple, even quintuple flips. (Yes, that’s 5 rotations). They’re elite athletes who connected via social media, and they’re pushing themselves to learn more skills on the #trampoline. They bounce 12 feet in the air and embellish their moves with skills that have names like kaboom, cody, ball-out and fliffus. Their sport is called #Gtramp, short for garden trampoline. It blends the countercultural aspect of skateboarding with the raw daring of parkour and the energy of freestyle snowboarding. “I still get told all the time to play a normal sport,” says @camshorey77, a 15-year-old from Andover, Massachusetts, who’s sponsored by the trampoline maker @skyboundusa. Like many of his fellow flippers, he said he’s often teased. But, he said, “I use the negative things people say to me as motivation to get better.” Here, @lauramcdermottphoto photographed 18-year-old Shea Cronin at a Gtramp meet up this summer. About 30 top Gtramp athletes — including @maxx_flipzz, a 9-year-old Gtramp enthusiast and our writer @ketteljm’s son — got together to support one another in learning new skills.
