I know there are a lot of young people who follow me and your first election might have been in 2016. Or maybe your first election will be this midterm election coming up. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t realize the importance of voting in the midterms until a little later in life. I remember the 1992 presidential election. I was too young to vote but most of my friends were able. When Bill Clinton won, it was widely reported that young people had done it. It was the college kids who were motivated, came out to vote and changed the tide for an entire country of people. I remember the day Barack Obama was elected more vividly. I was working at an ad agency and we all gathered in a conference room to watch Obama claim victory. History was being made and we were in a state of euphoric disbelief. There was such pride in being a small part of a hugely positive change. For Hillary supporters like myself, we all know how much the last election stung. We expected history to be made again and we were blindsided. There were lots of factors at work, but perhaps the saddest is that many people neglected to vote at all. Maybe you were too young to vote or your district made it too hard to vote or you didn’t realize just how much was at stake. We now know the price of complacency. But the message I want to get out there for new voters is the joy of being part of a win. Of feeling like your generation is getting it right and helping the future of our entire planet. In the words of President Obama, speaking yesterday at the University of Illinois, “The biggest threat to our democracy is indifference...a cynicism that's led too many people to turn away from politics and stay home on Election Day. To all the young people here today, there are now more eligible voters in your generation than in any other, which means your generation now has more power than anybody to change things...You can be the generation that at a critical moment stood up and reminded us just how precious this experiment in democracy really is, just how powerful it can be when we fight for it, when we believe in it. I believe in you. I believe you will help lead us in the right direction.”
