Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – I spent much of my summer close to home, assisting in the creation of a Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas, a regional assessment of the current status and distribution of these crucial pollinators. Our native bumblebees don’t get as much press coverage as the better-known (but non-native) honeybees, but several species are considered endangered. One, the Franklin’s Bumblebee from southern Oregon, may be extinct for reasons that are not entirely understood.
