Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/ Eye of the tiger – This is another image that I’ve just re-processed today and in keeping with a lot of the tiger images that I captured on my last trip to India I had effectively destroyed this image. Ham fisted processing had destroyed all of its character, all of its contrast between light and dark, I cannot even begin to conceive of what I was thinking? This image however, much like the RAW file, rejoices in the contrast, its greatest attribute that one eye is completely in shadow whilst the other is completely sunlit, and apparently fixed on me. Those of you who might have been privileged to have photographed any of the big cats in the past will know how transformative it can be to the image to have a pupil centrally placed in the eye like this. It conveys a feeling of alertness, of focus and concentration, much better than a droopy, half closed eye of one that is preparing to doze. This image then is in essence solely about the eye, it’s intent and its intensity, this majestic cat emerging from the forest shadows in which it blends so seamlessly. In reality it is only a 17-19 month old sub-adult, one of three that we spent time with as they played boisterously in secluded forest pools, their mother Tulsi having left the Park to go and cause some cow related mischief in neighbouring villages. The female of the three would usually have a hard time of it with her two bigger brothers but she was fast and agile, with a right hook as well! Processing then, much like the act of photography itself is an evolution, the technology improves and so does your vision. Take care of your original files, be they RAW or JPEG and re-visit them time and again, I guarantee that you will find some hidden gems tucked away that have been long forgotten about. Come and join me in India in January 2020 to photograph these tigers, email me at [email protected] for more info.
