Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This is an image of one of my favourite, the inimitable Grouse. Spending time with and photographing Grouse requires a particular type of stamina, a particular type of grit and determination, an unshakeable belief in the sure and certain knowledge that when Grouse does finally wake up that she will do something so mesmerizingly spectacular, so unexpected and so dramatic that any resulting image would surely change mountain hare photography forever. The zenith will have been reached, the Rubicon crossed, time to just sit and watch the awards flood in! You see, Grouse is like a coiled spring, she’s like a tornado that’s slowly brewing, pent up energy and excitement waiting to explode at any moment. I have spent so much time with her, watching, waiting, waiting some more, still waiting, slowly developing hypothermia then giving up and going home, then coming back the next day and doing the same thing! To date though unfortunately Grouse has never yet uncoiled, the tornado has never fully formed, in fact I’ve only ever seen Grouse do mostly buggar all! If indeed Grouse did indeed have a philosophy then it would undoubtedly be ‘if it can wait until tomorrow then let it wait!’ Grouse you see is not a seize the moment type of hare, she is not one for cramming as much drama into her life as possible, there is no ‘Carpe diem’ with Grouse. Grouse instead prefers to chill, and then chill some more, this is what I always end up doing whenever I perhaps foolishly decide to go and spend another few hours with her. I thought I would post an image of Grouse at her most excitable, most playful, this is Grouse in her full spectacular fury, this is 100% Grouse! So let me now ask you. Can you handle a bit of Grouse photography, want to spend several hours of your life freezing next to this fine specimen of harey immobility? Those of you that don’t have enough hypothermia in your life, feel free to email me at [email protected]
