For seven years, #cars were @mlcasteel’s way into other people’s lives. Casteel parked them for a living while managing the Veterans Affairs hospital valet service in Asheville, North Carolina. Casteel’s grandfather and great uncles fought in World War II, but beyond that his interactions with #veterans had been sparse, and his awareness of their struggles was even more limited. However, the inside of their cars revealed commonalities regardless of when they served or where they were from. With the veterans’ permission, Casteel began photographing inside the vehicles. A collection of those images can be seen in his most recent book, American Interiors. “There’s a misconception that veterans are slobs, and should be pitied or feared,” Casteel says. But he found that it was far from that simple. From the revolvers in the passenger seat, syringes in the center console, and cans of beer in the backseat, to the meticulously clean and organized cars, he saw addiction, alcoholism, mental health issues and a fight for some kind of normalcy. “What I was seeing in these cars was an illustration of the story that is difficult for many people to articulate,” he adds. “Nearly all of the images in the book are made from the driver’s seat because I wanted to put the viewer in the veterans’ shoes."
