Board games have been training us to shop for more than a century.
Shopping games date back to the 1800s, and they show how Americans’ shopping habits have transformed over time.
In Park and Shop, created in the early 1950s, players raced around town to complete their lists and were rewarded for getting the best parking spot and making efficient trips.
The game was actually an attempt to promote a new parking system developed by merchants in Allentown, Pennsylvania. They feared customers would abandon the downtown shopping district for new and convenient strip-malls and stores.
Park and Shop—developed by newspaper artist Campe B. Euwer—drove home the merchants' message that shopping downtown could still be fast and fun. It's now in our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. #BlackFriday
