Most people think of sea stars as beautiful, but rather lowly creatures of little ecological consequence. Only when a particular species, the ochre sea star began to disappear due to a wasting disease was their importance suddenly revealed to the general public. Ecologists however knew for years that this sea star is a important keystone predator.
