#SpeakingInDance | "Within this is 9 aboriginal footworks from Australia,” said the choreographer @mariaa_randall of “Footwork/Technique” which she performs at @performancespacenewyork on January 10. Part of KIN, a series curated by @emilyjohnsoncatalyst under the umbrella of First Nations Dialogues, this intimate look at aboriginal footwork is a form of land acknowledgment, paying tribute to the native inhabitants of a place. There’s a technical side, too; Mariaa, who belongs to the Bundjalung and Yaegl people of the Far North Coast of New South Wales, has had some strict teachers over the years. “It’s always ‘Get lower, get lower,’” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “Then I saw my tutor dance, and it was like she just hovered. It was amazing. I was like, OK, this is what it’s supposed to be.” @emonhassan made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
