Not your typical Maldives photo ? These beautiful islands may look like paradise, but they are under threat from mountains of trash. Just google “Maldives Trash Island” to see what I mean - it’s devastating ?? But @discoversoneva are determine to fight this. This morning we spent time at the #sonevafushi eco centre where they turn “waste to wealth”. 90% of the waste produced on the island is upcycled or recycled. They melt cans down and mould them into door knobs. They crush glass and polystyrene and form it into bricks. They roast coconut shells to produce their own charcoal for cooking. They compost everything they can ? Not to mention they filter, mineralise and bottle their own drinking water to avoid plastic bottles and they do not import ANY single use plastics into the resort. Oh and they don’t have beef on the menu, due to the environmental impacts ?? It doesn’t stop there. What I love the most about this hotel is their mission to empower women. On average only 4% of people working in the Maldivian hospitality industry are female, a huge imbalance. In Soneva Fushi 25% of the employees are female and they have triple the average amount of women in more senior managerial roles. This number is increasing year on year ?? (The incredible lady in this photo is Rai, @schrimpski who manages the eco centre!) ?
