Pregnant females give birth and remain in the protective waters until their young are strong enough to swim to the Arctic with them. I was so touched by this whale mother. She moved so close that I could reach her. She looked directly at me, and I felt we had a silent conversation. No words, just observing each other. It gave me chills, being aware that only a few decades ago grey whales were still slaughtered. Yet this whale mother now had trust in humans once again. There was so much wisdom radiating from her gentle look. I can only hope that the decision-makers in whaling nations like Japan, Iceland, and Norway will reevaluate their actions!
