I came across this tiny tortoise beetle while on assignment in @gorongosapark , Mozambique. The tortoise beetle is just one of over 3,000 beetle species that share a similar name because their body shape mimics that of a turtle. These beetles feed on leaves, and their larvae have an interesting habit of camouflaging themselves with their own feces. In other parts of the world tortoise beetles are brilliantly colored and are often collected and used in making jewelry.
