Photo by Maddie McGarvey @maddiemcgarvey | In December 2008, a dike ruptured at a Tennessee Valley Authority power plant near Kingston, Tennessee, pouring more than a billion gallons of toxic coal ash into the Emory River. Over 200 cleanup workers and family members are now suing TVA's main contractor, Jacobs Engineering, for refusing to provide them with protective equipment and for causing debilitating, and in some cases deadly, diseases. Thirty-six workers have died from brain cancer, lung cancer, leukemia, and other diseases. Sixty-three years after it opened and 10 years after the disastrous spill, the Kingston Fossil Plant is still burning 14,000 tons of coal a day—and producing about 1,400 tons of coal ash.
