These three details show a hand by Renoir from around 1875, early in his Impressionist career, a detail of “The Great Bathers,” completed in 1887, and a hand painted late in his career, 1918. By the mid-1880s, Renoir became dissatisfied with the limitations of Impressionism, resulting in an intense period of self-reflection as he searched for a fresh direction in his art. He traveled for the first time to Algeria and to Italy, where he was inspired by Italian Renaissance masters. He began experimenting with hard lines and defined contours in his own work. ”The Great Bathers” is the culmination of Renoir’s new style during this period, employing a much finer brush and carefully blended layers of colors to create solid dimensions of form.
