The folks who died when they thought they would be dancing. In a bar. A nightclub. The ones who were killed in a hospital, where you’re meant to heal. In the airport. The newsroom. The yoga studio. At home. Where women are 5x more likely to die in a domestic dispute if a gun is present. We honor those killed in their offices. In their city municipal building. In a restaurant. Those killed on their military base. At their local bowling alley. Standing on a street corner. Those lost because they showed up for their community at a political event, on what was apparently the wrong day. I wear orange for my cousin’s nine year old daughter — who I never got to meet because we always thought there would be plenty of opportunities for the family to eventually be in the same state at the same time — None of us could have imagined that a grown man would shoot a nine year old girl in the chest, indiscriminately, as though a little child could ever deserve such a thing. Time is an illusion. I will never forget that. We all wear orange to call attention to the national crisis that kills 100 Americans every single day. We do not have to live and die like this.
