Plastic waste is gathered all over Manila and sorted in the Baseco slums, where informal plastic waste workers sort by color and even the green, red, and blue bottle caps are separated into their own containers. These workers do not have a formal workplace, so most of them gravitate to public watersheds where they can clean the plastic. I watched as the unwanted plastic waste drifted into the watershed. Indifference, poverty, and informal workers result in the Philippines being among the top contributors of plastic waste into the world’s oceans. Once the plastic is sorted in the slums, it goes to a junk shop, or holding area.
