Though often referred to as ringtail cats or miner cats, ringtails aren’t related to cats at all! As their facial features suggest, they are close relatives of the coati and the racoon. Ringtail are excellent climbers and can rotate their hind feet 180 degrees, giving them a good grip for climbing up and descending vertical walls, trees, and cliffs. They also have excellent eyesight and hearing, which are both helpful adaptations for a nocturnal animal. This species is legally trapped for fur in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas, where it is also accidentally caught in traps set for more valuable fur-bearers such as foxes and raccoons. You can help protect ringtails by avoiding animal-fur products. By acting as an informed consumer you lessen the demand for the capture and trade of this and many other amazing species.
