Las Vegas, NV. The technical official is heard above the crickets in the crowd. “The bar is set. Lifting unattached, Mattie Rogers for her third attempt”. This is a different Mattie (@mattiecakesssss) than I was documenting less than a moment ago. Her coach, Danny, has left her to her music and her thoughts. I watch as she rubs her temples, even hitting herself. She’s the last lifter of the session - the heaviest clean and jerk. Earlier, she was joking between warm up attempts; lounging in her chair and talking with her friends and Danny. That light is gone, now. In its place is ferocity. My heart is racing, and I can’t tell if it’s my beat in my ears or if Mattie’s is so strong that everyone can feel it. I hear her yell - an inhuman thing. A noise that is primal and without hesitation. This is her element. Danny collects her, returning her to the stage. She shouts as she chalks her hands, and paces behind the bar. This is predatory. The bar - the weights - the doubts. None of them stand a chance. She addresses the bar - another shout; this one ringing in the ears of the spectators. It is done so soon. She is buried by the clean, but only for a moment. She breathes as she stands - a second later the bar is escaping her shoulders, finding the air. The bar falls and a smile spreads across Mattie’s face after she turns to Danny. The predator is gone. The ferocity dormant for now. For now. #barbellstories」6月27日 8時34分
