breuer_house_rules @_kellyw013 would love to read that article. We are all born "selfish" as a survival mechanism. I'm assuming that if a baby/child/adults basic needs are met (love, food, house), they can be then be giving and compassionate to others. But dont we all know ppl who have nothing & are still compassionate? And the ppl who seem to have A LOT can be the most selfish/non compassionate. I'm speaking as a grandchild of Nazi occupied Germany, Netherlands & France Jews who survived (6 million Jews did not, plus millions of other non-Aryans & those who were "other"). We (EVERY HUMAN) are only alive bc of the compassion of others. In any case, there is a Jewish concept of "repairing the world " (tikkun olam) and that is done through compassion for others.

breuer_house_rules @breuer_house_rules Compassion was modeled for me from day 1. My mother complimenting young moms at the mall..why mom? So they will treat their children better...a 28 year overseas relationship with the gentile lady who hid my grandmother in Holland....always passing along clothing & shoes to others, having playdates with the kid who never got invited out. My kids teach me compassion too through their acts of kindness towards other people, being charitable, lemonade stands, cleaning up the beach for the fish...

kalecrush I learned after 33 years that for me eating animals and compassion don’t go together. I don’t think I truly knew what it was before.
