This intricately decorated costume is an 18th-century chief mourner’s costume from Tahiti. It was worn during a dramatic expression of grief when a Tahitian chief died.
The costume has many elements, including a feather cloak, two barkcloth garments, and a breastplate decorated with nearly 1,000 tiny pearl-shell plaques. Conserving the cloak was a painstaking task – in some cases feathers had to be repaired individually.

This was collected in the 18th century.
More likely that it was a „gift“ from a Tahitian to a benefactor OR was purchased.
14-17th century colonial collecting was fundamentally different.
Museums are VERY sensitive to an items provenance and history.

An absolutely incredible read about this mourner's costume. The time and unwavering dedication that goes into the care of these artifacts is just mind blowing. This costume should absolutely be shared with the rest of the world and it's thanks to the British Museum for making that possible. ❤

@britishmuseum Is costume the right word? Isn't regalia or traditional dress more often used for this type of formal attire related to a culturally significant ritual or rite such mourning and funerary?.

Amazing outfit. Thank you so much for conserving and archive it for the future. I feel it is important to have the original to see the folds, materials, fabric and color. Cheers

Did I see that mourner's costume at the Captain Cook exhibition? I went to see Ashurbanipal and came away having seen CC as well; I can't get enough of the British Museum.

A really excellent restoration story. When I read the linked article I was pleased to see that there was and is ongoing consulting with Tahitian curator and conservators.
