The two busts in the first image depict the Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous. After Antinous drowned in the Nile, Hadrian publicly honoured him in statues across the Roman empire.  The second image is of a male Maya ruler – he was once assumed to be female, as he’s wearing a netted jade skirt worn by elite Maya women. He is, in fact, dressed as a youthful maize god who combines male and female genders.  The seated woman depicted on the Greek water-jar in the last image is probably the poet Sappho, who is well known as a symbol of love and desire between women. Little is known for certain about Sappho’s life but her poetry has been an inspiration to many women throughout history.
