Sitting beside Mount Athos is Greece watching a History Channel presentation on Vikings. It is an Anglicised perspective speaking of these barbaric heathen hordes raiding innocent God fearing monks who coincidentally inhabit monasteries filled with gold & silver sat on the perimeters of the expanding Anglo empire, Scotland & Ireland, both inhabited by Vikings.. Ask for a Viking perspective from people in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden Scotland & Ireland & you'll hear a different tale of history. Visit these countries & you will be greeted by a beautiful, strong & proud culture of Viking people. Why in the 21st Century, do we continue to create inaccurate stereotypes. False information is poisoning & we must stop using such terminology against other members of the human race. The continued use of terms as antiquated as "barbarian hordes" or modern as "terrorist", creates the conflicts that must be avoided. Opinions must have a platform for debate, without fear of condemnation or reprisal. Cultural perspectives MUST be openly debated until resolution can be found by those who seek peace, not who seek to profit from war. Words, more than weapons, are dividing us. Human appetite for using aggressive & divisive words must alter & be reduced, if we are ever to experience a peaceful world. Equal recognition must also be given back to so many indigenous groups worldwide who have fallen victim under ridicule of terminology & Empire expansionism. So important that media adjust umbrella terminology & that the inclusive wave which abides to gender now moves as rapidly to include race & culture. With the advent of the Internet we have the means to globally communicate, to debate, to heal these divides & wounds & to raise a voice as one global community supporting change. We need a single platform that measures our combined voice. I believe the human race is like a centipede, eagerly awaiting its head to think so that its legs can move unifies toward a common direction.

Discrimination and degradation to overtake and suppress people are a emaciating disease worse than cancer w an extremely high mortality rate. I find myself hesitant to mention my own history due to the way my own lineage is beamirfednhere in the states. I am descended from General Robert E Lee of the our Civil War. Many of us in the South know the war started over the control of money. The South was prosperous and independent. When Sherman came through my hometown, it didnt matter what color you were, he burned it all. Then we had the KKK. What swamp does such evil emanate? My soul yearns for the day when we see through healed eyes and embrace each other lovingly and accepting -intrigued by each experience and curious to learn of one another. I have been called names and verbally attacked by people I have stood in the gap for just b/c they dont understand an enigma like me and quickly jump to conclusions instead of getting to know me. That's ok. I won't change my path. I have tasted sweet knowledge of truth and refuse to be deterred. I press on, crawling when necessary til I can move freely. So must we all. Keep opening eyes and hearts Manu. Truly this is the fight we came here for.

When I studied theology our professors told us that attacking monasteries was like robbing banks. That's where the books were illuminated and gold and silver kept. I think the monetary importance of these items doesn't really justify stealing them but I also don't think we can apply 20th century thinking to judge the 8/9/10th century realities. The Vikings were a people with their own way of life. However the accumulation of wealth was a real necessity in their culture and the point of the raids. Although there were Viking settlements in Scotland it was a land of many cultures and kingdoms so wasn't unified until much later.
Nor was England until after Alfred- the Vikings had lots of settlements there too eventually living there and assimilating with the natives.
In Scotland the dialect of Aberdeen called Doric is not understood by the rest of Scotland. Partly because it is full of Danish words. Both my Icelandic and Danish friends have pointed out to me the large amount of Scandinavian words present in 'Scots' English

I’m sorry but I don’t get the post!?! So are you saying that back in those days there was not a nation who’s only purpose was expanding their empire through war and invasion, that attacked monks in their monastery for the gold and silver they had? This is not judging. Different times and people lived by different ways, laws and ethics back then. I just don’t get why after all those magnificent posts about Greece now after you visit the northern country’s ( which I also luv by the way. Great countries end even greater people. Especially Sweden) now Greek television is twisting history and using stereotypes???I don’t see anything wrong with the phrase “Barbaric Hordes”. These countries are very proud of their Viking heritage. After all, striking fear in the surrounding nations just by only the tales of a Viking attack is something those Vikings worked very hard for. Not everything needs to be politically correct... I’m sorry brother but this time as a Greek I am not able to follow your thoughts.

Truly the pen is mightier than the sword. All cultures are ethnocentric, therefore history always has a spin. The trick is finding the truth somewhere in the middle. From the dawn of time history has been the survival of the fittest. Every culture has its barbaric moments. But we can't look at the past through 21st lenses. Peace will always have enemies because strife makes money. We cannot depend on the press or social media to help make great change. They have too much invested in keeping us divided.

@manubennett your so right it's the way we indoctrinate our kids with our beliefs that's what have to change kids are a open mind we should stop putting wrong things in their minds, and yes so many indigenous groups still are not treated the way it should be, am a Christian (well sort of) but am ashamed of what we have done what the church has done to so many indigenous people and of what still is happening hope one day we truly can live as one nation ?????❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️???

You better actually visiting Mount Athos and get a glimpse of real Christianity than watch this stuff... vikings have also nothing to do with Orthodox Christendom and actually served as guards for the Byzantine Emperor (varangians). Moreover, the first converts among the Slavic nations to Orthodox Christianity were actually Scandinavian people (see the Rus people). The man who converted the Rus to Christianity probably had vikings as ancestors and maybe was one himself.
