What I find interesting about this Wikipedia definition is how quickly it moves to break connection with the African word Utu that contextually has a similar meaning. If it meant goat I'd understand the differentiation but "Humanity" versus "Justice" maybe that deserves a little more flexibility.
Also, given the broad & thorough inspection of archeology & linguistics by the British Empire, why are Maori children not taught by the Commonwealth Education Institution the historic connection of Maori words like Ra, Io & Utu having existed in these ancient, pre European, cultures? Without this being offered in education, the word for the Maori Supreme Being Io is something most Maori children are now completely unaware of. Imagine asking a child in Europe in 150 years whether theyve heard of the words God, Sun or Justice & they say no. Breeding out culture is a systematic objective. I hope these posts support the resolve of maintaining Maori language & identity & developing new ideas about the importance historically of the Maori peoples journey & history. Maori have been protecting some very important words through a strong oral tradition & whilst others have been building new concepts & religions, these words have supported others like whanau, iwi, mana, aroha & kaha all important words inside a wider cultural concept of being Maori.

It is wonderful the support you give to the Maori culture @manubennett , but unfortunately it is not an isolated case. It is estimated that currently the 96% of the more than 6000 languages of the world are spoken by only a 3% of the population, and that every two weeks a language is extinguished, being most of them indigenous languages. The great majority is not aware that with the extinction of these languages an important cultural heritage is lost as well... but unfortunately, again, in the world in which we live globalization is more important than culture... even more than humanity... and it is really sad

Very valid points. Culture plays very important roles. I don't think many could understand, not like one is taught to question that which is being taught. I started back in middle school. Still going to this very day. One thing I learned is people are complacent, and don't like anything that would induce and uncomfortable change.

It’s because scholars can’t agree if there is a connection. Remember, the scientific community still believes that modern man migrated out of Africa when there is plenty of fossil and DNA evidence that modern man came from Australia. We as laymen see the connection and it makes sense to us.

But just like the Welsh, the Irish, and the Dine (Navajo) people of Arizona, the Maori must make an aggressive effort to make sure the Maori language is a written language not just an oral one.
