I am currently making a short film titled Let’s Go See the Nuclear Reactor.
The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 has, in many ways, changed Japan’s way of being. Especially after the explosion and meltdown of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, hit by the tsunami, highly concentrated radiation showered even on the Tokyo metropolitan area, causing great panic for a time.
For three years or so, there were frequent protests against nuclear power, but they have since died down. Now that the Olympics are coming to Tokyo, the government is asserting its safeness. There was an episode in a Netflix series about dark tourism that visited the area around the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, but it was later revealed that the guide was an actor. It seems that the area of catastrophe is now part of cultural curiosity and entertainment.
The short film attempts to visualize such a laid-back feel surrounding this matter, accompanied by a poem I wrote, read, and sing.
The film is directed by Daisuke Kobayashi @dadadaisuke ,the up-and-coming director in the TV commercial industry.
The producer is Shinji Ogawa @小川真司 , who produced Norwegian Wood, the film I love by Tran Ahn Hung.
Artist Mr. @Mr. created the first storyboard.
Ren Sudo @kiyoubinbou3147 and Yuuka Kouri @kori_yuka play the leads.
My standing position is that of the general director, imagining the whole.
Music is by Yumiko Ohno @yumikoohno and Zak @namioto .
We are right in the middle of filming, with the completion planned for the end of this year.

in the past four years i went to the affected area of Fukushima (mainly Tomioka, Okuma and Namie) five times and in total I stayed there for approx eight weeks. I wrote and published a book on the situation and right now I am working on an artpiece in the so called ‘red zone’. I will travel back next October. I wrote my final paper in college on the nuclear fallout from Fukushima and the role that art played in healing the collective trauma of the people of Japan. You were a prime example I brought up in my research. Glad to see that you are continuing to use your platform to spread awareness about the issue!

My daughter was in Fukushima two years ago working with children at a music camp. She was deeply moved by the strength of many young people who lost their parents and families in the tsunami. We will look for your film.
