Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? This sacred animal holds many meanings in cultures across Africa and Asia. In Laos, which used to be nicknamed Kingdom of a Thousand Elephants, they are a symbol of great strength. The ones depicted here in a dominant, white pattern are a mythical elephant-lion hybrid called a “siho.” Shown with an ancestor standing atop its back, these sihos are pregnant with babies seen inside their bellies.
