@sjack37 @sjack37 @sjack37 chill man, your attempts at guilt just aren’t landing. I never said anything about the industry being the posterboard for morality, look at just about every corporation in America and you’ll find a lot of immoral or unethical practices. As I already mentioned, individuals and companies in the Pharma industry have done a lot of bad things, and in some cases like Skrekli really unthinkable, egregious things, but again my point is a little bit of fair balance and that the industry has contributed a lot as well. If you can’t see extension of the average age at death about 25 years then I guess you just can’t see it and you’re blinded by ideology. I assume you probably have the rational argument that we should just “get rid of all of them”. Let’s see what type of advancement in disease treatment and further discoveries happen, not to mention all the jobs that disappear. And when you or your loved one gets that life-saving medication, maybe then you’ll see some good that came from Pharma...or you can just sit on your own ideologic high ground, say no to the meds and hope the sickness goes away on its own.

@mdcap2000 No more misguided than former pharma salesmen taking the high road in the comment section of the onion. Then again if big pharma was paying my bills I could overlook the common practice of raising the cost of life saving drugs simply because price has absolutely no interaction with demand. This may be do to the fact that when your customers are deathly ill they can’t really “shop around”. I may even be able to consider the hiding of actual healthcare costs behind rebates and inflated insurance premiums a valid business strategy. After all 775 billion in revenue can’t be an easy number to increase. What I wouldn’t be able to do is believe that somehow these organizations are morally or ethically grounded. Not to mention the dubious comparisons of overweight people eating french fries to the opioid epidemic. Obviously big Pharma makes a lot money off of both conditions. Not they shouldn’t I guess? Almost 1 trillion seems a little steep though for “good people” doing “good work”. Then again I guess we are all complicit in our own way man. Whatever helps you sleep at night right it’s what’s really important.

@mdcap2000 ideology? I’m sure you believe strongly in a free market economy. I share this belief. A regulated free market economy is preferable to all the other ideas so far. What’s probably news is that these corps aren’t actually a part of the fee market. They’re an oligopoly. They don’t really compete and they only do research that’s worth money. They should be broken up not eradicated. This would restore competition, reduce drug prices, and diversify intellectual property holdings leading to innovation. The resulting companies could issue stock to the appropriate investors. Hell, we could also allow imports of screened staples to drive down the price of everyday medications. Maybes that would create a “fair balance” and maybe not so many people would get priced out of being alive..... or at the very least become dependent on the state to provide them with a life barely above poverty. I know... “ Don’t take the drugs if I don’t like the evil in the world.” You’ve said that a couple of times... also I’ll watch out for the evil of french fries....

@sjack37 seems like your predominant use case is the life-saving meds that are expensive and without competition. That’s a tiny % of industry revenues. The big revenue-producers (cholesterol, chemo, diabetes, etc) have a ton of competition, new classes being researched all the time, not to mention generic pressure. But who knows- maybe your idea would work. It’s a really tough call with hundreds of factors. Until then, you can probably acknowledge some positive results from the industry.

@sjack37 I’m actually not in the industry anymore. It’s got nothing to do with individuals. My comments relate to how the public generally perceives the entire industry as villainous, and it’s pretty much all negative and specifically used by adversarial politicians to get votes. There is no public recognition of all the good that the industry has done for humankind, and IMO there should be a more balanced view. Aka your comment is completely misguided.

Everyone commenting has had their life or a loved one’s life extended by many years (if not saved) by drugs created by this industry. They do bad things too for financial gain (like just about every other industry), but it’s a shame they’re vilified and never recognized for the good they’ve done, like expand avg lifespan by 25 years. Also, if we all learned how not to eat like fat-craved animals, we might put these guys out of business.
