This Civil War flag belonged to the 84th Infantry Regiment, United States Colored Troops, before coming to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. The names inscribed on the flag are Port Hudson, where the Louisiana Native Guards and the Corps d'Afrique fought before the 84th formed, as well as four battles in which the regiment participated.
During the Civil War, more than 186,000 African Americans joined the U.S. armed forces to fight for the Union and emancipation, and about half of those soldiers were once enslaved. More than 38,000 African American soldiers were killed.
African American soldiers have served in every war in U.S. history. In choosing to join the military, many African Americans sought to have their service understood by the nation as a demand for liberty and citizenship. #Jamestown400 #ANationsStory
