Another all-time club legend and football icon is the standard-bearer for the 1960s generation of United youth graduates: Georgie Best. Plucked from Cregagh, Belfast, as a 15-year-old ("I think I've found you a genius" read scout Bob Bishop's telegram to Matt Busby), the overawed young Best promptly returned to Northern Ireland when he first went to Manchester to join the club. Persuaded back, the youngster was coaxed through United's junior sides as he put some meat (not much, mind) on his thin frame to support the genius within it. His apparent sudden elevation to the first team — "a bolt from the blue", as he described it — was no act of spontaneity by Busby, who was ready to unleash his prodigy. So it was that Best earned his first-team debut, aged 17 years and three months, against West Brom in September 1963.
