This combination safe was used by the Post Office Department to store stamps, money orders and other valuables in the postal station at the “Little America II” base during Admiral Richard E. Byrd's second Antarctic expedition. Located about 800 miles from the South Pole, the post office processed more than 240,000 pieces of mail in a two-year period in the 1930s.
Most of this mail was from serious collectors seeking a stamp sold only at the Little America post office, as well a special cancellation mark from the bottom of the world.
The whole arrangement was the idea of Byrd’s close friend, then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. An avid stamp collector, Roosevelt even helped design the commemorative stamp. ❄
The @NationalPostalMuseum is one of the @スミソニアン博物館’s 19 museums and this week we’ve taken over their Instagram to kick off the official start of winter!
