Home mail delivery began in select U.S. cities as early as 1863. However, many rural Americans still had to travel great distances to pick up their mail at post offices or country stores that served as post offices. Experimental rural delivery finally began in 1896. Rural Mail Carriers served— and continue to serve—an important role in keeping remote communities connected.
In December 1915, Rural Free Delivery letter carrier John S. Mac Ilroy sent this postcard to a resident on his Pittstown, New Jersey, route. Many rural letter carriers left holiday greeting cards for their patrons, though few went as far as Mac Ilroy in creating specialty cards such as this one. A quaint poem is printed on the back including the lines:
“When packages due don't come on time
And those who are sending don't raise their sign
It sure would save anxiety
If I knew you and you knew me."
We’re the @NationalPostalMuseum and we’ve had a 🌬 blast taking over the @スミソニアン博物館 Instagram account! A big thanks to our Smithsonian colleagues and to all of you who joined us this week.
