Because of their beautiful, soft fur, chinchillas have been hunted since the early 1900s, and their pelts are often considered to be the best in the world. It takes 100+ chinchilla pelts to make a single fur coat, which means hundreds of thousands of chinchillas must be killed every year to meet the demands of the clothing industry. Although they are protected in the wild, they continue to be hunted for their fur in some remote areas. And while breeding programs do exist, reintroduction efforts have not been successful. By being a conscious consumer, you can play a role in helping this species secure a brighter future.
