Climbing “Pure Imagination,” which at the time was graded “9a, 5.14d” was a turning point in my career. Prior to this climb, I had recently won the World Championships for the Female Overall, and gradually begun transitioning from competition climbing; my focus allured by the outdoors. The Red River Gorge had been an area that I grew up frequenting. Being about an 8 hour drive from the DC Area where I was from, I could do weekend trips to there and to the New River Gorge. But it wasn’t until over a decade of prioritizing competition climbing (indoors) that #outdoor climbing started to set precedent. During the Fall of 2011, inspired by a video of @jonathansiegrist climbing the FA of this route, I took a trip to “try” it with @Keith Ladzinski @andy_mann and @namevian -
The purpose was just to experience what that “next level” in climbing felt like.
The first time I tried the #climb, I was surprised, because all of the moves felt doable. Separated by hanging in the rope and pulling on to the wall, in theory I could do the sequences. Often, I don’t figure out all of the moves within the first few tries. I have to widdle down the sequences and try out different body positions, figure out the most efficient way through sequences, and then, in trying the route, fall in new places and have to figure out the sequence again- to adjust and to perfect, so that all the moves flow together in a way that I can piece them together.
So, still, in my mind, I had a long way to go in this process.
Then, on my 3rd day, after playing a round of CONNECT 4 with Keith, I hopped on the climb to “figure out beta.” I made it through the first crux, and kept #climbing. It was my 6th try on the route, and it all was coming together, as I breathed heavily, wound my resting arm to recirculate blood when I could at the easier sections of the climb, chalked, and firmly attacked each next sequence. At the top, shock, surprise, ecstatic excitement flooded through me. I did something I didn’t know I could do. This meant something to me. I didn’t know at the time, but this experience would reframe the way that I would consider future projects with an open mind to possibility and with room to imagine.
