In 2004, @franklinjleonard created The Black List, an annual survey of the best screenplays just waiting to be produced. In the time that's passed, about 300 of those scripts have been made into movies that have racked up billions of box-office dollars and, at last count, 241 Oscar nominations. At the link in our bio, Leonard talks to Ben Barna about Hollywood's complicity in systemic racism and what the industry needs to do to effect lasting change. Of HBO's initial decision to pull "Gone With the Wind" from its programming slate (the streaming provider has now chosen to bring the film back with an historical introduction by the author and media studies professor Jacqueline Stewart), Leonard said, "Context is very important, but erasure of the first-ever Black winner of an Academy Award in Hattie McDaniel doesn’t solve anything. What we need to do is provide additional context for these things. It’s not that you should pull 'Gone With the Wind,' but there’s a script written by a Black writer, @gmgeiko, about the making of 'Gone With the Wind,' told from Hattie McDaniel’s perspective. Make that movie, HBO Max. Put that on your platform."
