Even in the spring, air temperatures in the Arctic sink as low as minus 30 degrees with the windchill. On a good ice year, there is a very high success rate for the survival of baby harp seals. During a bad ice year, as many as 70% of baby harps seals do not survive because the ice melts out from under them, and they are forced into the water before they are ready. Motherhood is always a tall order; the struggle to keep infant seals alive and satiated is one of the more tragic narratives that Mother Nature weaves. I am always humbled and awed by the resilience and dedication of mothers in some of the most extreme environments on this planet.
