Zoe Leonard made the installation “Strange Fruit” after the death of her friend, fellow artist and AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz. The work is made of hand-sewn fruit skins that were emptied, dried, faded, repaired, and ornamented. Recalling the tradition of vanitas still-life paintings, which feature objects such as flickering candles or wilted flowers to suggest the fleeting nature of life, "Strange Fruit" is destined to decay over time.

Leonard also invokes the song, “Strange Fruit” written by Abel Meeropol, which became a national sensation when recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. An antiracist anthem, the song’s haunting lyrics refer to the lynching of African Americans. Moved by the notion that American history is rife with devastating examples of violence against those who are different, Leonard applies the title to her remembrance of Wojnarowicz and those in the gay community lost to, and vilified by, the AIDS crisis. #PrideMonth 🏳️‍🌈
