The lake was formed by Laos's first dam built on a Mekong River tributary. Underwater loggers harvest the valuable wood, most of it bound for sawmills in Thailand. Dramatic changes to the Mekong’s water flow, caused by climate change and the dozens of dams built over the past 30 years on its upstream reaches in Laos and China, are threatening an ecosystem of unrivalled diversity outside the Amazon. Most are in China, but Beijing denies the dams are impacting down-stream water levels.
