It’s true—she explains—it *is* part of her job. But the bigger part of it, where she spends more of her time and gets more of her satisfaction, comes from talking with families and preventing and preparing for emergencies. Of course, the biggest emergency that healthcare providers have faced has been this pandemic—and the hospital where Dr Gong works has been at the center of that. Montefiore and Einstein have treated almost a quarter of the cases of Covid-19 in New York state and that includes patients that are struggling due to population density, poverty levels, and prevalence of underlying health conditions. As well as providing that direct care, Montefiore and Einstein have been leading in research; the hospital has conducted the largest-scale pediatric study into COVID-19 in the country. That desire to solve problems is one of the things that first attracted Dr Gong to medicine - the special combination of science and care (or what Dr Gong describes as “the privilege of helping people”). It’s not just how she works though; it’s where.
