The Pel’s fishing owl is the largest of Africa’s fishing owl species. They are often found perched in large trees alongside slow flowing rivers and estuaries where they can survey for their favorite food - fish. Since their prey lives underwater, this owl hunts by sight rather than sound, which is why they lack the usual concave facial disk that aids other owl species in detecting prey by sound.
