Photo by @deeptiasthana Chamba Lamo, a Buddhist nun, practices riding a bicycle in Ladakh, part of the western Himalaya in northern India. Buddhism spread in India in the second century. Most people in eastern Ladakh and western Tibet were practicing the Bon religion at the time. Eventually Buddhism spread all over Ladakh, and the Buddha's teachings have been well preserved by the populace. Ladakh now has a total of 28 nunneries.
One of those nunneries is in Nyerma village, just eight kilometers (five miles) away from Leh town, the capital city of Ladakh. The nunnery allows visitors to live, eat, and pray with the nuns. The nuns grow their own food in the organic garden, which they share with their guests. This not only allows young nuns to interact with Indian and international guests, but it also provides an opportunity to learn different arts and crafts from the visitors.
