You have a choice about who you follow, how often you use it, and when to engage in dialogue. Be mindful of your energy in this space. And create what you need.” -Nedra Glover Tawwab @nedratawwab . . Today’s weekly self-care bullet journal entry is from one of my favorite recent posts by licensed therapist and boundaries expert @nedratawwab. Whenever social media becomes a place that I find myself begrudging more than beholding, it’s almost always a sign that there are some choices I need to make in how to curate my tiny corner into a space that feels inviting and safe with regards to the content and accounts I choose follow as well as the boundaries that I uphold. To be honest, I still have a few more steps to go in this, but steps are progress and I often walk with a one step at a time stride. The following list by @nedratawwab really resonated with experiences that I’ve encountered in my years of being on this platform. Do any of the following resonate with you? . . Things I’m Reminded of as I Navigate Social Media by @nedratawwab: • It’s essential to set limits with your time because others will not • People will challenge just to start a debate (argument) • Just because people ask doesn’t mean you have to answer • Sometimes people follow you to watch and critique, not to support • Everything will not be relevant to everyone • Things are more nuanced than what we see • No two experiences are alike, even when they are similar • People will create stories about you and act as if these stories are facts • You cannot control what people post, but you can control who you follow and support . . ALL of these really speak to me and hit home with my experience on social media.
