For this method, a suspension of silver salts in gelatin is coated onto a support like paper, glass, or film. Unlike earlier photographic processes, in which materials had to be exposed and developed immediately after coating, the light-sensitive materials used in gelatin silver printing are extremely stable, and can be exposed years after being made. Because the image is suspended in an emulsion that rests on pigment-coated paper, gelatin silver prints are highly sharp and detailed, especially when compared to earlier methods in which the photographic image is absorbed into the paper. By the 1890's, gelatin silver printing had eclipsed all other methods of producing photographs in popularity, and remains a well-loved and frequently used method of analog monochrome photography today.
