Photo by photographer @nataliekeyssar "In July of 2019, which now feels like another planet, I traveled to Guyana to photograph a story about the country’s oil industry. I spent a lot of time shooting pipeline construction and portraits of very powerful people, but in between I walked the streets and beaches of Georgetown getting to know its gorgeous colors and stunning architecture and surreal juxtapositions. I happened to be there during a heatwave, and it seemed like it was so hot that you could actually see it in the air. I stopped to photograph this little abandoned boat on the shore as a bright yellow bird flew by the word 'deep' written on its side. The image didn’t make the story because, truthfully, it had nothing to do with the story, but my editor and I both loved this quiet moment anyway. I think sometimes as photographers we get a little too into the 'decisive moment.' Those images are great, but truthfully most of my favorite images are the in-between ones like this."
