Photo by @sarah_stacke / No project or assignment happens alone. Relationships are key. While working in Cherokee, North Carolina, and beyond on a story about the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians (EBCI) reclamation of stolen lands, Sheena Brings Plenty (@sheenabringsplenty) is my guide, fixer, grip, and friend. Sheena has lived in Cherokee for 12 years, her husband is the longtime photographer for the Cherokee One Feather newspaper, and their daughter is an enrolled member of the EBCI. Here, we test the light and scout a spot before a portrait of a Cherokee leader at Kituwah, a sacred Cherokee site.
