You might think that spotting this species in the wild would be simple thanks to its fiery red coat, but its color actually varies from black to red depending on location and time of year. Like most squirrels, the red squirrel has certain adaptations that make it an expert climber. Their sharp, curved claws allow them to scurry up and down tree trunks and house walls, while their strong hind legs make leaping between trees look easy. The squirrel’s long, bushy tail also helps with balance and steering when jumping or running along thin branches.
